  1. 1Unplug the filter, or the tank's filter pump and any other equipment in the tank, as Aqua One advises.
  2. 2Open the filter and take out the carbon cartridge.
  3. 3Rinse sponges gently in a bucket of water taken from the aquarium, never under the tap: Aqua One says tap water kills the filter's beneficial bacteria.
  4. 4Fit a new carbon cartridge every 6–8 weeks. Rinse new carbon first; Aqua One allows tap water for new carbon, never for sponges.
  5. 5Put the media back as it was. Plug the filter back in and check that water flows.
