  1. 1Unplug the filter, or the tank's filter pump and any other equipment in the tank, as Aqua One advises.
  2. 2Take out the carbon cartridge: remove a hang-on filter's dust cover; lift an internal filter out and pull off its casing; lift the lid and light unit off a built-in filter compartment.
  3. 3Rinse sponges gently in a bucket of water taken from the aquarium, never under the tap: Aqua One says tap water kills the filter's beneficial bacteria.
  4. 4Fit a new carbon cartridge every 6–8 weeks. Rinse new carbon first; Aqua One allows tap water for new carbon, never for sponges.
  5. 5Put the media back as it was; refill a hang-on filter with aquarium water before you switch it on. Plug the filter back in and check that water flows.
