How long it lasts

Replace it once any cutter's service marks are no longer visible, STIHL says; check the chain before work and sharpen it when it is blunt.

After replacing: No reset needed. Check the chain tension often while a new chain beds in.

STIHL MS 180 C-BE chainsaw: Mounting the bar and chain, tensioning the saw chain · STIHL Australia (official)
  1. 1Stop the engine and engage the chain brake. On a battery saw, take the battery out; on an electric saw, unplug it. Put on sturdy work gloves: the cutters are sharp.
  2. 2Undo the nut and take off the chain sprocket cover. On models with the quick chain tensioner (C-B, C-BE), open the wing-nut handle and undo the wing nut instead.
  3. 3Slacken the chain (turn the tensioning screw anticlockwise, or the tensioning gear clockwise on quick-tensioner models), then lift off the guide bar and the old chain.
  4. 4Fit the new chain in the bar groove so the arrows on the tie straps on top of the bar point in the direction of rotation, and seat the drive links on the chain sprocket.
  5. 5Put the bar back on with the tensioner peg in the hole in the bar, then turn the tensioning screw clockwise (the tensioning gear anticlockwise on quick-tensioner models) until the chain fits snugly against the bar and the drive links sit in the groove.
  6. 6Refit the chain sprocket cover flush with the saw and tighten the nut firmly (close the wing-nut handle on quick-tensioner models). STIHL says the chain expands and contracts as you cut, so check the tension regularly.
