The Barista Express® | A general cleaning guide: the conical burrs | Breville USA · Breville (official)
  1. 1Unlock the bean hopper, empty out the beans, lock it back on and run the grinder until no more coffee comes out. Smart Grinder Pro: hold the hopper over a container and turn its dial to let the beans out instead.
  2. 2Turn the machine off, unplug it, then unlock and lift off the hopper (Oracle Dual Boiler: take the lid off first).
  3. 3Take out the old upper burr. Barista Express and Smart Grinder Pro: lift it out by its wire handle. Barista Express Impress, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Oracle models: turn it to unlock, then lift it out.
  4. 4Brush the lower burr and the grind outlet clean with the burr brush. The burrs are sharp.
  5. 5Push the new upper burr firmly into place and lock it.

About your BCG820

Breville coffee grinder — the Smart Grinder Pro. Its burr is the Burr Assembly Upper (Pre 1926 PDC), part SP0001801.

Other burrs the maker lists for this grinder: Breville Precision Burr Assembly (SP0110082). Breville's Precision Burr Assembly: both burrs, upper and lower, in place of the upper burr alone. Fitting the lower burr means undoing the nut under it.

Where the model number is: Turn the machine around or tip it back: the model (BES… on an espresso machine, BCG… on a grinder) is on a sticker on the underside or the back panel.

Fits these 8 Breville models

BES878, BES880, BES980, BES990. For machines with a date code (PDC) before 1926, Breville says; later machines take SP0027464. Check the date code on the rating label under your machine.

No tools, a few minutes: 6 steps, listed on this page with the replacement video where the maker has one.
What happens if I don't change it?
Worn burrs crush the beans instead of cutting them: the grind turns uneven, with more fine dust and larger pieces, so shots run fast or choke and taste flat or bitter, and grinding takes longer.
Is there anything to reset afterwards?
No reset: Breville machines and grinders have no reminder for the burrs.
