How long it lasts

Replace it when espresso runs out around the edge of the portafilter or water leaks from the group head, Breville says; it gives no set interval.

After replacing: No reset: Breville machines have no reminder for the group head seal.

How to Replace the Steam Ring of the Barista Express (BES870) · Breville Philippines
  1. 1Press POWER to switch the machine off, unplug it and let it cool. Take out the water tank and drip tray.
  2. 2Clean any coffee out of the screw in the middle of the shower screen with a skewer, then turn it anticlockwise to undo it. Breville's books name the tool for some models (the Allen key on the Barista Express Impress, a flat-head screwdriver on the Barista Touch and Barista Touch Impress); check your machine's book for the others.
  3. 3Lift out the screw and the shower screen (Barista Touch Impress: and the dispersion plate behind it), noting which side faced down. Wash the screen in warm soapy water and dry it.
  4. 4Pull the old seal out with your fingers or long-nose pliers. Push the new seal in flat side first, so the ribbed side faces you.
  5. 5Refit the shower screen the same way round (dispersion plate first on the Barista Touch Impress) and the screw. Turn the screw 2-3 turns by hand, then tighten it until it sits flush. Don't overtighten it.
  6. 6Refit the drip tray and water tank.
