  2. 2Loosen the fastener(s) or unclip the cover and open or remove the air filter cover.
  3. 3Take out the filter cartridge (and the pre-cleaner, if your engine has one).
  4. 4Lightly tap the old filter on a hard surface to see how dirty it is; replace it if it is dirty or damaged.
  5. 5Install the new cartridge, then refit and fasten the cover. Briggs & Stratton says not to use compressed air or solvents on the filter.
