How often to descale
Descale every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first, or when the machine shows its descaling alert.
After descaling: The descaling alert clears once the descale and rinse cycles finish. On Vertuo Next, Pop and Pop+ the cycle cannot be stopped; if the machine is unplugged it restarts in descale mode and both cycles must run again. Creatista and Lattissima models lock after a set number of drinks if the alert is ignored.
How to descale with the 5000-2
Watch the guide or follow the steps.
- 1Eject any capsule, then empty the drip tray and the used-capsule container.
- 2Pour one bottle into the water tank and add about 500 ml of water, or fill to the tank's descaling mark. The Expert, Maestria, Gran Maestria, Vertuo Lattissima and Vertuo Creatista take both bottles.
- 3Put a container of at least 1 litre under the coffee outlet, and under the steam wand or milk pipe on milk machines.
- 4Start descale mode. The button sequence differs by machine: follow the steps on your machine's page here or in its manual.
- 5Let the tank run empty. Several machines then run the collected solution through a second time.
- 6Rinse the tank, fill it with fresh water and run the rinse. Exit descale mode if the machine does not do it itself, and never top up the tank mid-cycle.
