How often to descale

Descale every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first, or when the machine shows its descaling alert.

After descaling: The descaling alert clears once the descale and rinse cycles finish. On Vertuo Next, Pop and Pop+ the cycle cannot be stopped; if the machine is unplugged it restarts in descale mode and both cycles must run again. Creatista and Lattissima models lock after a set number of drinks if the alert is ignored.

How to descale your Nespresso Atelier

Watch the guide or follow the steps.

Nespresso Atelier - Descaling · Nespresso (official)
  1. 1Descale when the Descaling alert blinks. Allow about 25 minutes and stay nearby, as the machine asks you to do things along the way; if you ignore the alert, it locks after 30 more cycles until you descale.
  2. 2Lift and close the lever to eject the capsule, and empty the drip tray, drip base and capsule container. Pour one bottle of descaler and 500 ml of water into the water tank, fit the milk frother and put a container that holds at least 1 litre under the head.
  3. 3Hold Lungo and Ristretto together for 3 seconds until both blink, then press them again to start. Let it finish: any interruption, including a power cut, sends the machine back to the start of descaling.
  4. 4The solution runs from the coffee outlet and the milk frother in turn. When the tank is empty and Lungo and Ristretto blink, rinse the tank and fill it right up with fresh water.
  5. 5Press Lungo and Ristretto again to rinse. When the Descaling alert goes off and the machine is back in ready mode, put the milk frother away, refill the tank and wipe the machine with a damp cloth.
