How often to descale

Descale every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first, or when the machine shows its descaling alert.

After descaling: The descaling alert clears once the descale and rinse cycles finish. On Vertuo Next, Pop and Pop+ the cycle cannot be stopped; if the machine is unplugged it restarts in descale mode and both cycles must run again. Creatista and Lattissima models lock after a set number of drinks if the alert is ignored.

Watch the guide or follow the steps.

Citiz Platinum - Descaling · Nespresso (official)
  1. 1Descale when the descaling alert blinks. Eject the capsule, then empty the used capsule container and the water tank.
  2. 2Fill the water tank to half way (500 ml) with water and add one bottle of descaler. Put a container that holds at least 1 litre under the coffee outlet.
  3. 3With the machine on, hold all three buttons together for more than 5 seconds to enter descaling mode. Press the hot water button to start; pressing a coffee button at this point leaves descaling mode instead.
  4. 4When the tank is empty, rinse it and fill it with fresh water to the MAX line. Empty the container, put it back and press the hot water button.
  5. 5When the tank is empty again, repeat that rinse once more. The machine switches itself off when it's done, after about 15 minutes.
