How often to descale

Descale every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first, or when the machine shows its descaling alert.

After descaling: The descaling alert clears once the descale and rinse cycles finish. On Vertuo Next, Pop and Pop+ the cycle cannot be stopped; if the machine is unplugged it restarts in descale mode and both cycles must run again. Creatista and Lattissima models lock after a set number of drinks if the alert is ignored.

  1. 1Turn the machine off and set the Espresso button to 4 and the Lungo button to 1. Open and close the lever to eject the capsule, then empty the drip tray and used capsule container.

  3. 3Put a container that holds at least 1.5 litres under the coffee outlet and steam pipe, and set the steam handle to the steam purge mark. Press Lungo to start, and don't touch the machine until the middle light stops blinking and stays steady.
  4. 4Empty and rinse the water tank, drip tray and used capsule container, then fill the tank with fresh water and put the empty container back.
  5. 5Turn the Lungo dial to 2 for rinse mode and press Lungo; all the lights blink, then stay steady when the rinse is done. Move the steam handle to OFF and empty the container and drip tray.
